Pre-ETS Update

Welcome to the October 2020 edition of Transition Trends!

This month, I’d like to do a review and update of pre-employment transition services (pre-ETS). Starting October 1, 2020, we had a few changes to our pre-ETS contracts.

Remember that pre-ETS has 5 required activities and is available to students with disabilities statewide through our 12 pre-ETS providers. The 5 required activities are:

  1. Job exploration counseling: this may include, but is not limited to, interest surveys, reviewing career websites, identification of career pathways of interest to the student and review of local labor market information.

  2. Work-based learning experiences: this may include, but is not limited to, paid or non-paid work experiences in the community, volunteer work, job shadows, short or long-term internships, and employer mentoring activities.

  3. Counseling on opportunities for enrollment in postsecondary education: this may include, but is not limited to, gaining awareness of career pathways (i.e. agriculture, manufacturing, etc.), counseling on postsecondary training opportunities, and counseling to support a smooth transition from high school to postsecondary education.

  4. Workplace readiness: this may include, but is not limited to, soft-skills training, employability skills training, social/interpersonal skills, and independent living skills training.

  5. Instruction in self-advocacy: this may include, but is not limited to, instruction in self-awareness, disability disclosure, requesting accommodations, understanding rights and responsibilities, self-determination, and mentoring including peer mentoring.

A quick review of pre-ETS can also be found here:

To qualify, a student must have a documented disability (an IEP, 504 plan or other documentation is sufficient) and must be between the ages of 14 through age 22. Most providers take referrals for students directly from their school. If you are interested in receiving pre-ETS (or know a student who is) please reach out to school personnel for more information. Or, contact the provider in your area directly using the link above. You may also inquire about anything pre-ETS related at this email: Fssa.pre-ets@fssa.in.gov.
